MANILA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Visayas grid in the central Philippines was placed under red and yellow alerts on Friday, with over 30 power plants offline, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The grid in the Philippines has been grappling with power alerts since the summer months. NGCP said several coal-fired plants remained on forced outage, aggravating the supply crunch in the Visayas region.
The Philippines has long struggled with power supply reliability, and electricity costs remain relatively high compared to other Southeast Asian nations. ■
