HANOI, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's northern mountainous province of Son La has declared a natural disaster emergency in five communes in response to recent heavy rains, landslides and flash floods, the Vietnam News Agency reported Thursday.
The affected areas comprise the communes of Chieng Lao, Muong Bu, Muong Lan, Muong Chien and Ngoc Chien. Natural disasters occurred there between July 5 and Aug. 25, saturating the soil and increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods and inundation, particularly in mountainous areas, along rivers and streams, and on steep slopes.
The disasters damaged 396 houses, agricultural production, roads, technical infrastructure and public facilities across the five communes.
According to the provincial hydrometeorological station, rain and thunderstorms accompanied by whirlwinds, lightning and strong gusts are expected to continue through Friday evening.
Local authorities have been urged to closely monitor weather developments, maintain round-the-clock staffing, promptly issue warnings and take response measures to minimize damage. ■
