HANOI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's southern hub Ho Chi Minh City has proposed gradually restricting gasoline and diesel vehicles in its central area and Thu Thiem new urban area from July next year as part of a plan to establish a low-emission zone (LEZ), local media VnExpress reported Wednesday.
The proposal, which aims to control transport emissions, calls for emission requirements for different categories of vehicles to be tightened in phases.
By 2035, most vehicles operating within the LEZ are expected to use electricity or other green energy, while the city aims to complete the transition to green vehicles by 2040, the report added.
The proposal is currently open for feedback, the report said.
Ho Chi Minh City currently has more than 1 million cars and 11 million motorcycles, while road transport accounts for nearly 88 percent of fine particulate emissions from traffic, according to the report. ■
