MELBOURNE, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A man has been charged after a woman was stabbed and her 10-year-old son was assaulted in a random attack outside police headquarters in central Melbourne on Tuesday.
A police statement on Wednesday said that the boy was allegedly punched in the upper body in the Docklands area of Melbourne's CBD around 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday before his 46-year-old mother intervened and was allegedly stabbed.
Both were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a 27-year-old man from western Melbourne was arrested.
Police said he was charged with several offenses, including intentionally causing injury, unlawful assault and conduct endangering life.
The attack occurred outside Victoria Police headquarters.
Superintendent Zorka Dunstan told reporters on Tuesday night that the parties were not known to each other and the motive for the attack was unknown, but that the arrested man was known to police.
Two other children who were with their mother and brother at the time of the attack were not injured. ■
