NEW DELHI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government has set out plans to launch special trains to deliver onions to different states and cities in the wake of spiraling prices over the past few days.
Onion prices in major cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Patna, had increased from 40 to 60 Indian rupees (about 0.62 U.S. dollars) per kilogram over the past few days.
The onions delivered by these special trains would ensure that onions were sold at 35 Indian rupees per kilogram at retail outlets.
Called "Kanda Express," these special trains will carry onions from the southwestern state of Maharashtra, known for its vast onion cultivation, to different parts of the country.
According to media reports, nearly 800 metric tonnes of onions were expected to be delivered to the national capital city of New Delhi from Maharashtra's Lasalgaon area. A special "Kanda Express" train carrying onions is expected to reach New Delhi on Wednesday. ■
