MANILA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Two Philippine surgeons performed the country's first telesurgery on Tuesday in China's Shanghai by operating a surgical robot on a 53-year-old Filipino patient in Quezon City, the Philippines, according to local media reports.

The procedure was carried out at the Urology Center of the Philippines, using high-speed internet and robotic technology for real-time coordination between Shanghai and Manila. The surgeons operated from Shanghai, with a local team on standby at the Quezon City site, according to GMA News.

The surgery marked a new step in China-Philippines medical cooperation, following previous collaborations in liver transplants, physician training, and cloud-based medical platforms.

The Philippines, an archipelago with unevenly distributed medical resources, could benefit from remote surgery as a new option for patients in remote areas.
