PHNOM PENH, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia (TRC) on Friday urged social media users to be extra vigilant over fraudulent schemes involving the advertising and provision of purported account and page protection services in exchange for a fee.

According to a TRC statement, individuals have been offering "account protection" or "page protection" services on social media, claiming they can guarantee that a user's account or page will not be disabled, suspended, deleted or lost.

"The TRC clarifies that any claim of guaranteeing account or page protection in exchange for a fee constitutes the dissemination of false information," the statement said. "Such claims may contain elements of fraud and give rise to liability under existing laws."

The regulator added that this deceptive advertising aims to exploit user fear.

It added that scammers use it to extract money or trick victims into disclosing confidential data, including phone numbers, email addresses, passwords, One-Time Passcodes (OTPs), and page administration rights.

Furthermore, the regulator emphasized that using social media accounts and pages requires compliance with Cambodian laws and regulations. Users must also adhere to the terms of service and community standards of each respective platform.

Accordingly, paying a fee to a third party cannot replace, exempt, or reduce either of these obligations, the statement said.
