COLOMBO, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Five individuals were killed in a traffic accident that took place in Monaragala, southeast Sri Lanka, on Friday morning, local police said.
The accident occurred on Kumbukkana Kalu Bridge along the Wellawaya-Monaragala Road when a tipper truck traveling towards Wellawaya collided with a tractor approaching from the opposite direction.
Eight of the 10 people who were travelling on the tractor's trailer sustained heavy injuries. Five succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment, and the rest are currently receiving medical treatment.
The drivers of both vehicles have been arrested in connection with the accident, the police said, adding that further investigations are underway. ■
