Global sand dunes map reveals clues to climate, Mars: study

MELBOURNE, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- An Australian researcher has created the most complete and accurate digital map of Earth's wind-blown sand dunes to date, offering new insights into climate conditions on Earth and other planets, including Mars.

The study analyzed global satellite imagery and high-resolution topographic data to create a comprehensive digital atlas categorizing dune systems worldwide, according to a statement released Thursday by Australia's Monash University.

Integrating that map with detailed analyses of climate and geology uncovered a number of fundamental environmental rules that dictate the presence of sand dunes, according to the study published in Nature Communications.

Sand dune shapes and patterns reflect local weather and geology, helping scientists reconstruct ancient climates or infer surface conditions on distant worlds, but efforts have been limited by the lack of a unified, highly detailed global dune dataset, researchers said.

In dry regions, dune formation is mainly driven by how winds converge to trap sand and how close an area is to a sediment source. In wetter, more vegetated areas, sediment availability alone is insufficient, with stronger winds required to overcome environmental resistance and form active dunes, according to the research.

The study also found that crescent-shaped barchan dunes can help infer wind direction and sediment properties. Researchers said the findings are directly applicable to Mars, where dunes are often the only measurable surface feature that can reveal information about surface winds and mineralogy.

"Having a consistent, worldwide map allows us to better understand how wind-shaped landscapes evolve across our planet today, offering a clearer benchmark when analyzing similar features in the rock record or on planets like Mars," said the study's author Andrew Gunn from Monash University's School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment.

The researchers said the standardized global dataset could help scientists decode environmental changes across Earth's history and the solar system, while providing climate modelers with a crucial tool to predict how desertification and wind-driven erosion could reshape communities in the decades ahead.
