ULAN BATOR, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia will ban the use of all types of social media in general education schools across the country starting from the 2026-2027 academic year, Luvsantseren Enkh-Amgalan, minister of education and science, said Wednesday.
Enkh-Amgalan said a decision had been made to completely ban classes from maintaining social media chat groups or pages involving parents, teachers and students starting from the upcoming academic year to ensure students' online safety and reduce screen dependence.
Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are among the most widely used social media platforms in Mongolia. In particular, it has been common for teachers to communicate with students and their parents through Facebook chat groups and post homework assignments in those groups.
Traditionally, the academic year for educational institutions at all levels across Mongolia begins on Sept. 1. ■
