JAKARTA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Jakarta provincial government aims to have at least 10,047 electric buses operating in the city by 2030 as part of efforts to reduce emissions and air pollution, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said Thursday.
Around 500 electric buses are currently operating in Jakarta, Pramono said, adding that the city's future fleet would also include hydrogen-powered and hybrid buses.
Jakarta aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with the transport sector a key focus as it accounts for 52 percent of the city's direct emissions.
The city also aims to increase public transport's share of trips to 55 percent by 2045 by expanding public transport networks, promoting transit-oriented development and introducing measures to curb private vehicle use.
According to public transport operator Transjakarta, one electric bus could save up to 302 million rupiah (about 17,000 U.S. dollars) in fuel subsidies annually, with total savings estimated at 3.9 billion rupiah over a 5.5-year operating period. ■
