PHNOM PENH, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia collected 14.5 trillion riels (approximately 3.58 billion U.S. dollars) in total tax revenue during the first half of 2026, marking an 8.4 percent increase year-on-year, according to a Ministry of Economy and Finance mid-year review released Wednesday.

The country's tax collection is managed by two primary institutions: the General Department of Taxation (GDT) and the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

The GDT, which oversees domestic taxes, generated 2.05 billion dollars in the January-June period. Meanwhile, the GDCE, which collects duties on goods entering and leaving the country, brought in 1.53 billion dollars.

The report noted that first-half fiscal performance remained strong despite economic pressures from a global fuel crisis tied to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

"Overall, fiscal revenue in the first half of 2026 surpassed the same period in 2025 due to strict measures to prevent and suppress tax evasion, strengthened governance within the GDCE, and sustained strong performance from sand export taxes," the report said.
