YANGON, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Flooding has affected 32 townships across nine regions and states in Myanmar since mid-July, Myanmar Radio and Television reported on Saturday.
The affected areas are Kachin state, Kayin state, Sagaing region, Bago region, Magway region, Mandalay region, Mon state, Shan state and Ayeyarwady region, the report said, citing the Department of Disaster Management.
More than 60,000 people were affected by the flooding, while 126 flood shelters were opened across the 32 townships to accommodate evacuated residents, it said.
Flooding began in mid-July as rivers and streams overflowed following heavy rainfall. Mon state and Bago region were among the areas initially affected. Flooding later occurred in other regions and states, including Ayeyarwady region, where an embankment breach caused flooding.
As of Wednesday, more than 170 million kyats (about 80,952.3 U.S. dollars) worth of assistance had been provided to flood-affected people, it said, adding that assistance is still being provided. ■
