KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia recorded 90,726 live births in the second quarter of 2026, down 6.1 percent year on year, official data showed Thursday.
Of the total, 46,953 were male babies and 43,773 were female babies, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement.
In terms of ethnicity, Malays accounted for 67.3 percent of all live births in the quarter, up from 67.1 percent.
Conversely, the proportion of Chinese and Indian live births declined to 7.5 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, from 8.7 percent and 4.3 percent a year earlier.
Meanwhile, 49,827 deaths were recorded during the quarter, an increase of 0.6 percent.
Despite the decline in births, Malaysia's total population was estimated at 34.4 million in the second quarter, up 0.5 percent from 34.2 million a year earlier. ■
