MANILA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from extreme rainfall triggered by Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay and the southwest monsoon has risen to 19, with 15 others injured and four still missing, according to the Philippine government on Tuesday.
The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday that landslides caused by incessant heavy rains were the main cause of casualties. Benguet province reported the highest number of deaths at 12, followed by Rizal with four and Batangas with three.
The NDRRMC said that the weather disturbances have affected nearly 2.27 million people across 11 regions. Over 900 evacuation centers have been set up, sheltering about 95,000 people.
The Philippine government has provided over 73 million pesos (about 1.2 million U.S. dollars) worth of aid as rescue operations for the missing continue, according to the NDRRMC. ■
