WELLINGTON, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Tuesday called an urgent in-person meeting of his National Party caucus for Wednesday amid renewed speculation over his leadership, 90 days before the country's general election.
Luxon wrote on social media that "increased speculation" about his leadership had become a "major distraction" and needed to be resolved quickly.
"I am calling an urgent in-person Caucus meeting tomorrow at 9:30am in Wellington to resolve the issue," Luxon wrote on social media platform X.
National's support rate was 31 percent in a Taxpayers' Union-Curia poll released on Aug. 7, up 0.5 percentage points from its previous poll, with the National-led coalition projected to retain a narrow parliamentary majority.
However, a Radio New Zealand-Reid Research poll in July put National at 28.7 percent, its lowest level since Luxon became party leader in 2021. ■
