YANGON, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 40,000 people have been affected by flooding from July 30 to Aug. 7 following the breach of the Ngawun River embankment in Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region, a spokesperson for the president's office said, citing the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
The embankment breach occurred in Laymyethna township in Ayeyarwady region on July 30 after sand boils and land subsidence were observed.
To assist flood victims, temporary relief camps have been opened. As of Friday night, floodwaters in urban wards had gradually declined, while about 35 percent of communication services had been restored.
Food supplies have continued to be distributed to affected people, with more than 146 million kyats (about 69,523 U.S. dollars) already provided for relief efforts. ■
