DHAKA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen people were killed and dozens of others injured in two separate road accidents in Bangladesh on Friday, officials said.

Nine people were killed when two passenger buses collided head-on at around 7:30 a.m. local time in Bangladesh's Sylhet region, some 240 km northeast of the capital Dhaka, Chowdhury Md Zaber Sadeque, superintendent of police in Sylhet district, told Xinhua.

According to the police officer, eight people died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital.

The accident left 14 others injured, he said, adding that two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

In a separate road mishap in Bangladesh's Bogura district, approximately 197 km northwest of Dhaka, seven people were killed, and 15 others injured, Md Shahidul Islam, a local Fire Service and Civil Defense official, told journalists.

He said the accident happened at 5:30 a.m. as a speeding bus went out of control and ran over a gathering of roadside workers.

All the injured were rushed to local hospitals and clinics, he added.
