JAKARTA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A wildfire in the caldera area of Indonesia's Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has expanded to around 120 hectares as of Friday after burning for days.
Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, head of the TNBTS office, said a helicopter designated for water bombing operations was still extinguishing hotspots located on steep cliffs that were inaccessible to ground crews.
"There are still several hotspots that have not been extinguished. Approximately 120 hectares of land have been affected by the fire," Nugraha told Xinhua on Friday.
He said the rugged terrain had become the biggest challenge for firefighters, as many hotspots were located on steep slopes where joint emergency personnel cannot safely reach on foot.
He said the fire was suspected to have been caused by human activity rather than natural factors. ■
