NEW DELHI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government on Thursday approved the scheme of "GobarDhan" worth 237.31 billion Indian rupees (nearly 2.49 billion U.S. dollars) for accelerating the production of compressed biogas (CBG) to ensure clean energy and decrease the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels.
The scheme's objective is to increase domestic CBG production by nearly 10-fold over the next 10 years.
It aims to transform the country's abundant agricultural residue, cattle dung, press-mud, municipal organic waste, and other biomass resources into clean fuel, organic manure, rural income and national economic value, said an official statement issued by the federal government.
The scheme will be implemented from the current fiscal year and remain effective for the next decade, according to the statement.
Besides increasing domestic CBG production, the scheme will also aim to mobilize large-scale private investment and create a vibrant circular bio-economy across the country, the statement added. ■
