KABUL, Aug. 6 (Xinhua)-- Three young men drowned while swimming in a river in Nili, the capital of central Afghanistan's Daikundi province, on Wednesday, the provincial government office said on Thursday.
The victims were swept away by the river while swimming in the provincial capital, according to a statement issued by the provincial authorities.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies after more than two hours of search and rescue operations before handing them over to the victims' families, the statement said.
Drowning incidents occur periodically across Afghanistan, particularly during the summer months, when many people swim in rivers and other natural waterways that often lack safety measures and lifeguard services. ■
