CANBERRA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- New electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for over 20 percent of car sales in Australia for the third consecutive month in July, according to new industry data.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) said on Wednesday that 103,656 new vehicles were delivered to Australian customers, marking the market's strongest-ever July result.
Of those new vehicles, it said 23,510 were battery EVs, representing a market share of 21.7 percent.
It represents a slight fall from the record-high battery EV monthly market share of 23.3 percent set in June.
Battery EVs have now accounted for at least 20 percent of new vehicle sales in Australia for three consecutive months after the milestone was first achieved in May.
As of the end of July, Australians had purchased 127,244 battery EVs in 2026, surpassing the 103,269 purchased in 2025.
Tony Weber, chief executive of the FCAI, said in a media release on Wednesday that there is a risk the rapid uptake will outpace the supply of public charging infrastructure.
"Governments and the private sector must work together to ensure that the public charging network meets growing demand, particularly in regional areas and for motorists who do not have access to charging at home," he said.
BYD remained Australia's second-most popular car manufacturer in July behind only Toyota, selling 7,857 new vehicles across the month.
The July figures took BYD's sales in Australia in 2026 to 60,192 new vehicles, an increase of 115 percent from 27,962 sales at the same point in 2025. ■
