JAKARTA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- A critically endangered Sumatran elephant died from complications caused by digestive and respiratory tract infections after undergoing 34 days of intensive treatment at the Minas Elephant Training Center in Indonesia's Riau province, the local Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) said on Tuesday.
BKSDA official Ujang Holisudin said the 46-year-old male elephant, Jovi, has been stationed at the center since 1998.
According to the agency, Jovi began showing signs of illness last month, including loss of appetite, body tremors, stiff limbs and difficulty in standing.
Listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Sumatran elephant continues to face mounting threats, primarily from habitat loss and human-elephant conflict. ■
