VIENTIANE, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Laos has strengthened efforts to prevent and combat human trafficking by introducing policies aimed at guiding systematic implementation, improving effectiveness, and ensuring that measures are aligned with the current situation.
The local Pasaxon newspaper on Monday quoted Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Khamphan Phommathat as emphasizing the need for stronger coordination among government agencies and society to effectively prevent and combat human trafficking. His remarks were made on the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed annually on July 30.
Khamphan said the government and the Lao National Committee on Anti-Human Trafficking have assigned specific responsibilities to relevant sectors and called on all levels of society to actively participate in preventing and combating the crime.
To help people recognize risks and avoid becoming victims of human trafficking, authorities will continue public awareness campaigns through various media platforms, focusing on exposing new tactics used by traffickers, particularly online scams. Authorities will also strengthen inspections and management of entertainment venues and service businesses to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
Police forces and border authorities nationwide will enhance border controls, strictly monitor entry and exit activities, dismantle illegal marriage brokerage networks, and prevent unlawful labor migration. Online platforms used to advertise fraudulent employment opportunities or facilitate illegal activities will be closely monitored, investigated, and blocked, with offenders subject to strict legal action.
Meanwhile, the government will strengthen oversight of employment agencies, promote vocational training, and expand domestic job opportunities to better meet labor market demands.
Officials will also step up efforts to monitor, rescue, protect, and assist Lao citizens who become victims of human trafficking abroad, ensuring they receive timely support and safe repatriation. ■
