KABUL, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's counter-narcotics police have collected more than 11,000 kg of opium over the past 25 days and burned it publicly on Sunday, the provincial police office said in a statement.
"A total of 11,080 kilograms of opium-type illegal drugs that had been collected during a series of operations over the past 25 days were publicly set on fire this morning outside the provincial capital, Faizabad," the statement said.
Police have also taken into custody 22 individuals on charges of involvement in drug trafficking, the statement added.
Previously, police in similar operations set on fire more than 14 tons of illegal substances and illicit objects used in manufacturing illegal drugs in central Afghanistan's Daykundi province four days ago. ■
