TOKYO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- A head-on collision between two passenger vehicles in Japan's Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, on Sunday left one person dead, two others critically injured, and five more hurt, local media reported.
The accident occurred at around 3:20 p.m. local time on a municipal road near Omuro in Kashiwa City. One of the vehicles veered off the road and fell into a rice field after the collision, public broadcaster NHK reported.
According to police, a total of eight people traveling in the two vehicles were taken to hospital. A woman believed to be in her 90s was later confirmed dead, the report said.
Two other women, believed to be in their 40s and 60s, were in critical condition and unconscious, while the remaining five victims, including two children, sustained injuries but were conscious and receiving medical treatment.
The crash occurred on a straight stretch of road with good visibility. Police are investigating the cause of the accident. ■
