5.2-magnitude quake reported near New Zealand's Te Anau

WELLINGTON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- A magnitude-5.2 earthquake struck 35 km northwest of Te Anau on New Zealand's South Island at 3:23 p.m. local time on Saturday, the country's earthquake monitoring agency reported.

The quake's epicenter, with a depth of 102 km, was located at 45.13 degrees south latitude and 167.47 degrees east longitude, according to GeoNet.

Nearly 1,500 felt reports were submitted to GeoNet, with most people describing the shaking as weak or light.

Two weeks earlier, a magnitude-5.9 earthquake near Te Anau prompted authorities to issue evacuation notices for parts of the West Coast before they were lifted later.
