SYDNEY, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Milakulo Tukumuli from the centrist Oceanian Awakening (L'Éveil océanien) party has been elected as the 12th president of the New Caledonian government, Radio New Zealand reported on Saturday.

The 41-year-old Tukumuli was on Friday elected to lead the 11-member collegial executive government of the French Pacific territory's government by the 54-member Congress following the June 28 provincial election.

It makes Tukumuli the first president from the Wallisian-based Oceanian Awakening party, which he founded in 2019. He is the first New Caledonian government president of Wallisian heritage.

Oceanian Awakening won four seats in Congress and formed a governance pact with the pro-France Loyalists coalition, which won 24 seats.
