DHAKA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Heat-induced productivity losses cost Bangladesh between 1.3 and 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, or up to 0.4 percent of gross domestic product, a new World Bank report has shown.
The losses rise sharply on days when temperatures exceed 37 degrees Celsius, according to the report released on Wednesday.
The report said the impact of heat is most acute in the capital, Dhaka, where heat is effectively erasing the equivalent of 465,000 full-time jobs every year.
The climate-driven economic losses are projected to more than double by 2080, with Dhaka set to see a 7.4-percent drop in productive working hours. ■
