TOKYO, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended mixed Wednesday, with the Nikkei index briefly falling over 3 percent intraday, amid lingering concerns over the profitability of investments in artificial intelligence, while bargain hunting limited the benchmark's declines.
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 930.73 points, or 1.49 percent, from Tuesday at 61,434.19, its lowest close in about two months.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 10.44 points, or 0.26 percent, higher at 3,974.03.
On the stock market, weakness in high-tech shares dampened sentiment as investors grew increasingly skeptical about whether massive investments in AI will generate sufficient returns, analysts said.
Meanwhile, bargain hunting after the previous day's plunge helped lift the broader Topix index and trim losses in the benchmark Nikkei. ■
