HANOI, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security has proposed requiring international telecommunications and cross-border Internet service providers to store certain data in the country and establish local branches or representative offices under a draft law on data security, local media VnExpress reported on Thursday.
The draft law would apply to foreign entities processing data generated in Vietnam or related to the country's legitimate interests, even if they do not maintain a physical presence in the country, according to the report.
Companies using overseas cloud services would be required to maintain real-time backup copies in the country while ensuring that ultimate control over the data remains with the competent Vietnamese authorities.
Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) service providers would be required to verify the legality of training data, digitally label AI-generated content and adopt measures to prevent the spread of false information affecting national security, the report added.
The draft is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly for consideration and approval at its October session. ■
