PHNOM PENH, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Approximately 88 percent of Cambodia's workforce remains engaged in the informal economy, leaving millions of workers with limited or no access to legal labor standards and social safety nets.
The data was highlighted on Wednesday during a national workshop on advancing social protection, which drew around 250 participants to the capital.
"Accelerating the transition of vulnerable workers into legally recognized and socially protected employment remains a key national priority," the press release said.
Cambodian Minister of Labor and Vocational Training Heng Sour emphasized the government's dual focus on expanding social safeguards and boosting employment quality.
Around 7 million people, equivalent to roughly 41 percent of the population, now benefit from social health protection schemes, according to a joint press release issued after the workshop. ■
