NEW DELHI, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing floods in India's northeastern state of Assam have affected over 362,000 people and so far killed 11, officials said Tuesday.
The situation continues to be grim in the flood-hit 16 districts of the state.
"Today a death due to flooding was reported in Charaideo district, taking the overall death toll to 11 in less than a month in the state," a local government official said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 794 villages are inundated, and over 19,099 hectares of crop area have been damaged.
The local authorities have set up 49 relief camps and 52 distribution centers in the affected districts, where 44,511 people, including 8,335 children, have been provided food and shelter.
Officials said rescue and relief operations have been intensified by the local administration in the state's 16 affected districts, where a population of 362,933 is affected by the floods.
The state-run broadcaster All India Radio said several roads, embankments and other infrastructure have been damaged due to floodwaters and erosion.
"Meanwhile, urban flooding has affected parts of Jorhat, Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan districts, impacting nearly 7,800 people," the broadcaster said. ■
