TOKYO, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo recorded its first "extremely hot day" of the year on Monday, with temperatures topping 35 degrees Celsius, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The weather agency also declared the end of the rainy season in the Kanto-Koshin region, which includes Tokyo, and the Tokai region in central Japan on the same day.
According to the agency, temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius or higher at more than 600 of its 914 observation points on Monday morning, placing much of Japan on alert for heatstroke.
High temperatures are expected to persist across western and eastern Japan throughout the week, the agency said.
An "extremely hot day" in Japan refers to a day when the temperature reaches or exceeds 35 degrees Celsius. ■
