NEW DELHI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and seven others went missing after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in Indian-controlled Kashmir, local media reports said Sunday.
The flash floods and landslides hit the frontier twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri, southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
According to officials, the incessant overnight rains forced hundreds of residents to move to safer locations as floodwaters inundated low-lying areas, including the new bus stand at Bela Colony of Rajouri during the early hours.
Dozens of vehicles were swept away or submerged after rivers overflowed and breached their banks, causing widespread disruption.
The situation prompted authorities to launch a multi-agency rescue operation to trace the missing and shift the trapped to safer locations amid persistent rainfall and damaged roads.
Authorities have already issued a weather advisory about moderate to heavy rainfall across Indian-controlled Kashmir until July 23. ■
