ALMATY, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan's 11th peacekeeping contingent has arrived in Lebanon to serve as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Kazakh Ministry of Defense said Wednesday.
The team of 11 peacekeepers will serve in southern Lebanon as part of the Indian battalion. Their tasks include monitoring compliance with the ceasefire, conducting patrols, assessing the security situation, guarding UN facilities, coordinating with local authorities and communities, and participating in humanitarian activities aimed at maintaining regional stability in line with the UN Security Council mandate, according to the ministry.
Kazakhstan's participation in UN peacekeeping operations remains an important part of the country's contribution to international security, helping strengthen its reputation as a responsible partner in global peace efforts while providing its military personnel with valuable operational experience in multinational missions, the ministry added.
Established by the UN Security Council in 1978, UNIFIL has around 8,500 peacekeepers coming from almost 50 troop-contributing countries. Kazakhstan first deployed a 120-member peacekeeping contingent to UNIFIL in November 2018. ■
