PHNOM PENH, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia registered a total of 15,239 electric vehicles (EVs) between 2021 and June 2026, according to a Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) report released Monday.
MPWT spokesperson Phan Rim said that the Southeast Asian nation witnessed a sharp rise in EV registrations starting in March 2026, and this surge followed geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East that drove up global fuel prices.
According to the report, approximately 4,876 EVs were registered between March and June of this year alone.
"EVs reduce fuel costs and eliminate tailpipe emissions," Rim told Xinhua, highlighting the economic and environmental benefits driving the shift.
The spokesperson added that Chinese automotive brands, including BYD and GAC, are among the most popular EV choices in the Cambodian market. ■
