YANGON, July 13 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,681 people from 435 households have been evacuated after continuous heavy rainfall caused the Belin River to rise above the danger level, inundating low-lying areas of Belin township in Mon state, Myanmar, an official from the Belin Township Fire Services Department told Xinhua on Monday.

The heavy rain began on Friday, prompting authorities, the Belin Township Fire Services Department, and volunteer rescue teams to carry out evacuation operations, he said.

A total of 10 temporary flood relief camps were opened to shelter displaced residents, he added.

As of Monday morning, although the Belin River's water level has begun to decline, evacuees were still staying at the relief camps as a precaution, he said.

Residents are expected to be able to return to their homes in the coming days if weather conditions continue to improve, he added.
