KABUL, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces have seized a significant cache of weapons and ammunition in Dand Patan district of eastern Paktia province, the country's Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Sunday.
Acting on credible intelligence and a tip-off, personnel unearthed the clandestine depot containing 8,000 rounds of machine pistol (MP) ammunition, 12 hand grenades, and 500 rounds of DShK heavy machine gun ammunition, according to the statement.
Initial investigations indicate the arsenal had been concealed by smugglers intending to traffic the equipment across the border into a neighboring country. Security forces intercepted the cache before it could be moved, it said.
No arrests have been made so far in connection with the discovery. However, officials stated that the identities of those responsible have been established, and suspects will be apprehended upon completion of the ongoing investigation. ■
