KABUL, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Personnel of counter-narcotics police have arrested 22 drug traffickers in eastern Afghanistan's Khost province over the past two weeks, said a statement of the Ministry of Interior Affairs on Sunday.

The alleged drug smugglers, after illegally taking the contraband into the province, distributed it to the people in several districts, according to the statement on the social platform X.

Police have also discovered a variety of illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, hashish, heroin and thousands of stimulant tablets locally known as "Tablet K," from the possessions of the arrested smugglers, the statement further said.

The Afghan government has stepped up its crackdown on illegal drugs, as police seized 24 kg of opium in northern Takhar province and over one ton of illicit drugs in western Ghor province respectively over the past week.
