PYONGYANG, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The first enlarged meeting of the Ninth Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) was held on Thursday, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday.
Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the WPK, chairman of the WPK Central Military Commission and president of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), guided the key event, it said.
The country's military "should invariably play a leading and core role not only in defending socialism but also in the struggle for comprehensive development of the state," Kim was quoted as saying during the meeting.
The meeting made decisions on "upgrading the technical infrastructure of combat systems, bolstering up the nuclear force both in quality and quantity and pushing ahead with the plan for standardizing, specializing and modernizing military bases in a far-sighted way," the report said.
It called for expanding the functions and missions of the General Reconnaissance and Intelligence Bureau in multiple ways, and laid out detailed tasks to accelerate the construction of modern naval bases and technical upgrading aimed at expanding shipyard capacities at all levels, the report added. ■
