KABUL, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Personnel of counter-narcotics police in the drive against illegal drugs discovered 24 kg of opium and took into custody its smuggler in Takhar province, north of Afghanistan, on Thursday night, spokesman for the provincial police office Nizamudin Omir said Friday.
The alleged drug trafficker, according to the official, placed the narcotic in the cavities of a truck and was attempting to take it outside the province last night, but police identified and took him into custody with the illicit drug in the provincial capital Taluqan.
After completion of the preliminary investigation, the alleged drug smuggler will be handed over to the judiciary, the official further said.
Previously, police in similar operations discovered and destroyed over 1 ton of illicit drugs in the western Ghor province. ■
