PHNOM PENH, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian and Malaysian armed forces chiefs vowed Thursday to boost military cooperation to benefit both nations and the region, according to a Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) press release.
The commitment was made during bilateral talks between RCAF Commander-in-Chief Vong Pisen and the visiting Malaysian armed forces chief Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman, according to a press release.
Both sides agreed that strong Cambodia-Malaysia military cooperation will help maintain peace, stability and prosperity for both countries and the ASEAN region, the press release said.
Pisen said Malek Razak Sulaiman's visit was crucial to strengthening military ties and appreciated Malaysia's role in mediating the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict and its initiative to establish the ASEAN Observer Team.
Pisen reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to resolving border issues peacefully in accordance with international law and existing agreements, rejecting any use of force to alter frontiers.
Malek Razak Sulaiman said Malaysia strongly supported resolving the dispute between Cambodia and Thailand through dialogue under the General Border Committee or the Joint Boundary Commission mechanisms, based on the principle of ASEAN centrality.
Malek Razak Sulaiman arrived in Cambodia on Wednesday for a four-day visit. ■
