NEW DELHI, July 7 (Xinhua) -- At least two paramilitary personnel were killed Monday after unknown gunmen ambushed them in India's northeastern state of Manipur, police said.
The attack took place near Nungshang Kong along the national highway in Ukhrul district, about 61 km northeast of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.
Following the attack, an intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides lasted for over three hours.
"Security forces rushed to the site of the attack, and there was an exchange of fire. Further operations are underway to neutralize the militants," said a statement issued by the police.
Reports said the firing triggered panic among the residents who fled to safety as the gunfire intensified. ■
