Strong winds, tornadoes damage more than 100 buildings in S. Myanmar

YANGON, July 6 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 buildings were damaged by strong winds and tornadoes in southern Myanmar on Sunday evening, officials from the Myanmar Fire Services Department told Xinhua on Monday.

Strong winds and tornadoes hit Taikkyi township in Yangon region and Paung township in Mon state, the department said.

A tornado struck Taikkyi township at around 8:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, destroying about 30 houses, according to the department.

In Paung township, a tornado struck at around 7:30 p.m. local time, while strong winds later swept through the area, damaging 93 buildings, including houses, religious buildings, government buildings and schools, an official from the township's fire services department said.

Local media also reported that a tornado in Nattalin township, Bago region, on Sunday evening damaged about 60 buildings.

Local fire services personnel, relevant organizations and rescue teams worked together to clear fallen trees and debris from roads, the Myanmar Fire Services Department said.
