KABUL, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations has warned of a worsening drinking water shortage in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, saying the crisis poses serious challenges to the city's future development, local media TOLOnews reported on Sunday.

According to the report, declining groundwater levels, rapid population growth and climate change have significantly intensified pressure on Kabul's water resources, making the city one of the worst-hit urban areas in the region.

Officials said efforts are underway to address the water shortage through several major infrastructure projects.

Kabul has struggled with drinking water shortages for years. Despite repeated efforts by the authorities to improve water supply, the problem remains a major challenge for the city's growing population, the report added.
