KABUL, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province have destroyed large quantities of expired food items and medicines as part of efforts to protect consumers, a local official said on Sunday.
According to Mufti Ahmadullah Haqqani, head of the Consumer Protection Commission, about 95 metric tons of expired food products collected over the past three months were destroyed.
The commission also found around 3.5 metric tons of diesel at a fuel station that was heavily mixed with water. The substandard fuel was confiscated and destroyed, the official said.
The expired goods had been collected during inspections carried out over the past three months.
Residents of Kandahar welcomed the campaign and called on traders to pay greater attention to the quality and expiry dates of medicines, food products and fuel to help safeguard public health and consumer rights. ■
