S. Philippines armed group leader killed by soldiers, police

MANILA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A leader of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in southern Philippines' Mindanao Island was killed in a joint enforcement operation on Sunday, according to the military.

Local infantry said Ismael Abubakar, known as "Commander Bungos" and a leader of BIFF, was alone in his hideout and opened fire at approaching lawmen. He was later killed by soldiers and police at about 2 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Abubakar had warrants of arrest for murder and destructive arson. Several of his subordinates have already surrendered to the government, according to the military.
