JAKARTA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's state-owned electricity company PLN will modify some coal-fired power plants to enable the use of low-calorific-value coal, aiming to prevent potential coal supply shortages.

The company has been making adjustments to its power plants to ensure that rolling blackouts do not happen again, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said on Thursday.

The policy stems from the dwindling supply of coal with a calorific value above 4,500, while the production of lower-grade coal continues to rise.

Prasodjo said the modifications had already been implemented at Units 6 and 7 of the Suralaya Coal-Fired Power Plant, allowing them to consume coal with a calorific value of around 4,100-4,300 instead of mid-to-high-grade coal.
