ISLAMABAD, June 28 (Xinhua) -- One civilian was killed and five others, including four police personnel, were injured in a militant attack in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province on Saturday, police sources said.
The attack began when armed militants opened fire on a joint checkpoint manned by police and the Frontier Corps (FC) in Ziarat district, the sources told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Security personnel returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee. No casualties were reported among security forces during the initial exchange. Shortly afterward, another group of militants ambushed the vehicle of the district police chief near the checkpoint, injuring four policemen.
A private vehicle carrying local preachers also came under fire during the ambush, leaving one civilian dead and another injured.
Additional police and FC personnel rushed to the scene following the attack. Authorities said the situation has been brought under control, and the injured were shifted to the provincial capital of Quetta for medical treatment.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. ■
